Area of the project & Area Profile
The above Project is proposed for Leather workers associated in the form of cooperative societies . There are 374 Co-operative Societies registered with commissioner of Cottage Industries of Gujarat State, of which 216 cooperatives are working societies as per the information provided by commissioner of Cottage. All 216 societies are from various district of Gujarat, so the project is proposed for the whole State and not for a particular district. It is observed that there are minimum 51 members extend up to 300 members in each society and of 80 percent of the members fall under BPL. It will be taken care that while selecting a cooperative for upliftment a criteria of minimum 80% beneficiary are from BPL families. Considering the above facts around 37400 leather workers (approximately) wil be benefited under this special project. In addition to this thousands of unorganised leather workers will also benefited.
Key Activities
The key activities of the project are diagnostic study of all working Leather Cooperative Societies, training and up gradation of skill, up gradation of Cooperative Societies, and finally providing marketing support to make them self dependent. Simultaneously this project will also motivate the leather workers of unorganized sector and form a co-operative and get the benefits under such type of projects.
Beneficiaries Details

Most of the Beneficiaries of the Project is proposed for BPL families, of the various districts of Gujarat State. And all the beneficiaries is proposed from the leather Cooperative Societies, which falls under our project of Leather Sector Development in Gujarat.

This special project will also attract the leather workers working in unorganised sector. They will motivate by this project and will form cooperative for their betterment.

Implementing Agency
The above project of leather sector development in Gujarat State is proposed to be implemented with the help of DIC and DRDA of the State – for getting information about leather workers.
The project is proposed to be implemented directly through CLRI Chennai NID, Ahmedabad, FDDI ,Noida, CFTI, Chennai , for training and up gradation of skill while through CED, Gandhinagar, EDI, Bhat-Ahmedabad and IC & EC Ahmedabad for entrepreneurship Development.
Thereafter up gradation of Cooperatives, Marketing support by way of visit and participation in Leather fairs at Calcutta, Delhi, International Leather Fair, Chennai and opening of show-rooms within the State and outside the State in Metropolitan City Delhi /Banglore/Bombay/and Hyderabad
All the activities are proposed to be arranged, coordinated and implemented by GRIMCO.
Role of the Departments NGOs/PRIs
GRIMCO, A WHOLLY OWNED Govt. of Gujarat Undertaking is proposed to play a key role for this project, while our parent department (Industries) and Commissioner of Cottage Industries will also support in implementing this project.
 
Benchmark Survey
It can be evaluate by income generation of individuals and upgraded cooperatives .
Raw Material Supply
Raw material for leather tanning cooperatives is mainly raw hides which are abundant in supply in the State and surplus stock are procured by other states. While for leather article and footwear making leather , form leather and other ancillaries are nearly available within the State.
The constrain in the leather tanning industry is the availability of chemicals, for that it is proposed to set up a Chemical Bank by GRIMCO which is already covered under the above project.
