Gujarat is well-known in the country for cooperative movement and there are number of co operative societies in various filed . There is also a very good network of leather cooperative societies. There are two type of cooperative society in leather sector. One is for Tanning and Second for leather articles and footwear making.
Most of the members of the cooperative societies are in the category of BPL families. If we select the members of BPL families and impart them with necessary inputs in turn they will work for whole society and guide the other members also. The will impart training to the remaining members of the societies. As they are in the form of society there is no need to form Self Help Group.
There are as many as 374 leather cooperative are registered with Commissioner of Cottage Industries of which 164 working societies working for Tanning of hides and skins. 52 working Societies working for making leather article and footwear. Very few societies well equipped with infrastructure and machineries. Rest of the societies are doing work with traditional technology and techniques, which results in to failure of leather processing in Gujarat. Most of the hides and skins taken away by other State for processing - value addition and selling. Leather sector has a great potential for providing employment to the marginalised rural youths. For
strengthening of leather activity in Gujarat following programmes are proposed under this project.
