It has been proposed to train two artisans from each working cooperative societies till now 19 artisans of 10 cooperative societies have been trained at CLRI, Chennai. 100 artisans of 50 cooperative societies in a batch of 25 each at CLRI, Chennai. The training fees will include orientation programme at Chennai , Tutoring visits , Mentoring visits , Feedback system development , organising buyers - Sellers meet , Establishing Leather Chemical Bank , Development of design and technology and Monitoring & Evaluation.

Motivation of the Proposal
Primary motivation of the proposal is to assess the unit specific needs of each cooperative in leather sector in Gujarat and provide comprehensive training, tutoring and mentoring on technology up gradation and management for at least two BPL nominees of each unit complete with product selection and market intelligence spread over a period of two years such that the cooperatives gain economic viability and sustainability at the end of the project period. |

| The purpose of the proposal is to empower leather cooperatives with technology and resource and capacity to assess the scope of business and adopt the unit to changing market needs to gain long term and economic sustainability |

| Methodologies and Scope of work proposed |
- Selection of Trainees: Each leather cooperative in Gujarat will be requested to nominate two BPL representatives each for the empowerment program. These trainees will be selected by the Gujrat Rural Ind. Marketing corp Ltd. Gandhinagar among the nominees of respective managements of cooperatives.
- Criteria for Selection of Trainees: CLRI recommends that the nominees may kindly be selected from among those who have passed at least school final examination of a recognized board since they will need to serve as managers in the cooperatives after training. Knowledge in Hindi is preferable.
- Tutoring Arrangements: Two representatives of Rural Industries, Marketing Corporation one scientist of RECD,Ahmedabad of CLRI will be included in the special involved in the project for a period of two years. These tutors will serve as on site resource persons and will visit the cooperatives periodically and provide feedback to the mother institution , CLRI, and the nominee of the State Government and GRIMCO.
- Mentoring Arrangements: A special feature of the project is that will include two resource persons with industrial and entrepreneurial experience to provide and mentoring advice during the two years of the project on selection of product mix for manufacture, technology selection, pricing and market feed back systems. these activities will be provided to the cooperatives by two professional consultants who will visit the cooperatives periodically and provide an assessment and advisory report.
- Medium of Training: The special program will be mostly conducted in Hindi and Gujarati. Some special courses will be conducted in English but simultaneous translation in Hindi/Gujarati will be made feasible.
- Resource Persons: Resource persons will be selected from professional managers with experience in Gujarat and leather industries, entrepreneurs of small leather business houses, leather technologists, financial and marketing experts, designers from NID/ FDDI/ CLRI and business managers in leather sector.
- Duration and Scope of Overall Program: The total duration of the program will be two years as shown in figure 1.

- a. First phase of the program will start on Firs. quarter . A six-week orientation program will be conducted at CLRI, Chennai. After this orientation program, a placement examination will be conducted and absorption of training assessed.
- Trainees will be initiated into their work in respective cooperative with the help of a mentor and tutor.
- After a period of six months, the trainee will be brought back to a feed back and assessment program at Gandhinagar. This time once again some important resource persons from the orientation program will be brought back for assessment.
- Special augmentation programe will be conducted in Gujarat employing tutors, mentors and select resource persons at Gandhinagar.
- A workshop will be organized, which will include an inspection and exhibition of products made by each cooperative. At this exhibition, it will be possible to invite also some select buyers.
- A buyer-seller meet will be organized.
- At the end of one-year period, a professional team of assessors will visit each cooperative and carry out an impact assessment for internal alerts for the project team.
- Special coaching programs will be organized for the needed cooperatives on technology management.
- At the end of one-year, decisions may be made for upgradation of some select cooperatives based on performance and useful market tie-up arrangements.
- At the end of second year, based on performance, cooperatives will be rated and network suggested based on business scope and other logical needs.
