In the state of Gujarat there are 374 leather cooperatives are registered with Commissioner of Cottage Industries. Gujarat State , covering approximately 37400 leather ( on an average 100 members per cooperative ) in addition to this there are thousands of leather workers are working in unorganised sector also.

By upgrading the leather cooperatives which includes, infrastructure such as work shed , water facility , Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), latest tools , equipments and machineries and working capital fund, the all members of upgraded cooperatives will be benefited , and in such upgraded cooperatives, the trained members of the societies will give training to remaining members of the societies and also cater the thousands of unorganised leather workers.

Under this special project 60 leather cooperatives will be taken care for their upgradation, and the upgradation of these coopratives will produce the products of new design, newly developed products , diversified products having better quality. This will reflect in increase their sales, new market segments, new export avenues and there by better yield. These all will help in upliftment of 6000 leather workers (approx.) of 60 leather cooperatives.

This will motivate the other remaining 314 registered cooperative and also thousands of other unorganised leather workers will form cooperative/association for getting such government support.

In all it is proposed to cover all the leather workers around 37400 in organised sector plus thousands of other leather workers in unorganised

sector will be motivated and benefited, out of which 80 percent of leather workers fall under BPL which comes to around 30000 in organised sector and thousands of leather workers in unorganised sector.

This whole process of upgradation will prevent the migration of raw hides of the Gujarat state to other state of the country, by providing better tanning facilities in Gujarat itself.

Thus the thousands of leather workers who all are BPL engaged in collecting carcuss will get more return, as the value addition to carcuss will be done in the state itself.

Considering the above facts , the Leather Scenario of Gujarat will definitely change drastically and Gujarat shall be one of the leading leather and leather goods, articles, footwear manufacturing state of the country.
